Ah for B&W it's NTSC vs PAL...
@benoit strange, I don't remember color compatibility issues between NTSC & PAL. It was just a different number of vertical lines and a different frame rate.
PAL and SECAM, otoh, were identical except for the color channel encoding, resulting in a B&W picture on old color TVs which weren't dual-standard.
@codewiz it depends of the TV. My actual NTSC TV displays PAL in B&W.
Some displays nothing, some have artifacts like jumping... Etc.
